Head Volleyball Coach
In nine years as the head coach of one of the most successful Army West Point programs, Alma Kovaci has proven to be one of the best young volleyball coaching minds in the country. During her tenure at West Point, Kovaci has authored a 186-85 (.686) record and led the Black Knights to the 2009 Patriot League title. The 2009 team captured the program’s first championship since 1994 and fourth overall, and the Cadets punched their ticket to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in the program’s 35-year history. Kovaci reached the 75-win plateau faster than any other coach in Army volleyball history, accomplishing the feat in her third year at West Point. The Black Knights have averaged 21 wins per season and enjoyed six 20-plus-win campaigns during her impressive tenure. Kovaci became the third coach in Army history to reach the century mark at West Point in 2011, joining legendary head coach Bob Gambardella (1983-1995) and her mentor, Glen Conley (1999-2006).
After serving as assistant volleyball coach at Army West Point for the last six seasons, Stafford Barzey enters his sixth season with the Army West Point volleyball program and first as Associate Head Coach. Barzey boasts a wealth of experience on many levels, particularly in the New York area. Since joining Kovaci's staff for the 2010 season, Barzey has helped maintained Army's success in the Patriot League. In the 2015 season, the Black Knights finished with a record of 21-8, eclipsing 20 wins for the first time since 2012. The team boasted a 12-4 mark in the Patriot League this past year, the lowest number of conference losses since the acclaimed 2012 season. Barzey previously coached at CCNY where he was responsible for directing all aspects of the program to include practice planning and implementation, physical conditioning, player skill development, academic progress, fund raising and recruiting.
Sarah Lusk joined the Army volleyball staff prior to the 2014 season and enters her third year with the team. Lusk is an Army veteran who completed two tours of Iraq and coached the All-Army Women's Volleyball Team to a pair of gold medals. While contributing to all aspects of the program, Lusk concentrates her efforts working with the middle blockers and Army's overall team blocking. She also handles travel operations, equipment and joining in the Black Knights' recruiting efforts.
